Providing patients with motion feedback improves adherence to exercise programs
A major challenge for physical therapists is facilitating patient engagement and adherence to home exercise programs. Traditionally, adherence falls over time, with patients performing fewer exercises each week as they work independently. This research investigates how OneStep’s digital health platform uses unique progress reports to reverse this trend and keep patients committed to their recovery.
The study found that sharing a progress report with patients significantly increases their future adherence. While a typical patient might perform fewer exercises per week than the previous week, those who received a report bucked the trend — completing more exercises in the week they received their feedback.
One of the findings of this research is that sharing a progress report has a higher impact on adherence than having a meeting with a PT. These reports, which contain the history of a patient’s gait parameters, provide the motion feedback necessary to motivate continued effort. By providing patients with a clear view of their own data, clinicians can improve program adherence and ensure better long-term outcomes.
